noncitizen

Editorial | Illustration | Photography

noncitizen aims to uplift migrant communities by explaining and illustrating immigration policy. In this educational journey, we follow noncitizen, an everyday hero who supports the storyline. This character takes on many forms, from union painter to college student; he represents the roles of millions of migrants in the United States.

  • This project offers an objective documentation of the current social climate in the United States. Through personal accounts of how these legislations have affected people in their migration journey, to spotlighting current events and overlooked injustices. This editorial challenges the current narrative and breaks the stigmas placed on the undocumented community.

Purpose: My concept was inspired when an ICE raid happened in Newark, on my street. This occurred the weekend when topic decisions were due, and the event solidified my decision overnight.

Process: The two visual languages I wanted to pursue were a classic newspaper and a children’s illustration book. I combined these two concepts, incorporating stylized line drawings into a traditional column-based layout.

Commitment: Immigration is a difficult topic to discuss. The most revealing moment in the creation of my editorial was the emotional impact it had on me and others. This is, without a doubt, my most rewarding project.
